First Nations Engagement Officer

Job Description

The First Nations Engagement Officer will contribute to the facilitation of culturally responsive communications and engagement between Traditional Custodian group(s), Project Teams, Delivery Partners, and other Government stakeholders on the design and delivery phases of the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic venues.

You will be a key part of the First Nations Engagement Team, report to the Authority’s First Nations Engagement Lead and connect with project stakeholders to deliver meaningful engagement with Traditional Custodian Groups and ensure venue designs are of Place and Country.

This role is positioned within the Communication and Stakeholder Engagement team. As the Authority’s central communication function, the team engage extensively with delivery agencies, games partners, external organisations, and private sector advisors across a wide range of matters relating to the Games Masterplan, capital planning, infrastructure development, project delivery as well as venue operational matters.   

This is a 3-year, maximum-term role with the possibility of extension.

Key Responsibilities

• Promote culturally responsive communications and engagement with Traditional Custodian groups on key aspects of games project. This includes project briefings, meeting arrangements villages and establishment of other related agreements and reports.
• Create and maintain project documentation with the support of the First Nations Engagement Lead. This includes Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property agreements (ICIPs), Engagement Agreements, Cultural Narrative Reports, engagement actions register, evaluation reports and other correspondence. 
• Coordinate and facilitate engagement meetings, ensuring they run smoothly by preparing and distributing agendas, minutes, outcomes and actions.  
• Develop and implement systems as well as assurance frameworks to monitor the effectiveness of engagement activities. This will ensure that feedback is integrated into ongoing project processes. 
• Collaborate with First Nations Design Integration Consultants to help identify, assess and mitigate project risks through the Project Risk Register.  
• Provide other administrative support including contributing to reporting processes and developing internal communications. 

Requirements

• Background in built environment, planning and/or design with knowledge and experience of culturally respectful and appropriate design is desirable. 
• Strong experience in engaging with Traditional Custodian groups including an understanding and respect of important cultural protocols. 
• Excellent communication skills with the ability to develop rapport with a wide and complex range of senior stakeholders. 
• Highly adaptable and able to navigate politically and culturally sensitive issues.
• Well-developed written communication skills, including a high attention to detail.  
• Agile and flexible, with the ability to be highly responsive in a fast-paced and changing project environment.
