Medical Personnel – Special Olympics WA State Team
As the Medical Personnel volunteer, you will play a vital role in supporting Special Olympics athletes throughout their preparation and participation in the 2026 National Games. You’ll work closely with the Head of Delegation and coaching teams to ensure every athlete is healthy, safe, and ready to perform at their best.

Commitment
Regular – less than 6 months

Time Required
Approximately 2–4 hours per week from February 2025 to November 2026 (medical planning, documentation, athlete liaison as required). Attendance at a compulsory Team Training Camp (June 12-14). Travel to Melbourne in October 2026 for the duration of the Games (18-24 October). Availability for extended daily hours during the Games to manage medication, injury care, and reporting.

Training
SOA Volunteer Induction and Medical Policy review required. MP works with SOA staff and HoD to ensure records, management plans and medication registers are compliant and correctly stored. Clinical experience essential; systems guidance provided.

Key Responsibilities

Key Duties
• Gather and organise medical information for all team members prior to the Games.
• Prepare medical registers and athlete medication timetables and support coaches in understanding and implementing them.
• Communicate with athletes, families, and carers regarding medical needs and requirements.
• Administer medications, provide injury treatment, and oversee recovery sessions during the Games.
• Advise coaches on how injury or illness may impact athlete performance and provide strategies to support athlete wellbeing.
• Provide daily medical reports during competition and compile post–games medical documentation.

Requirements

Skills and Experience Needed
Qualified medical professional (e.g., doctor, registered nurse).
Experience working with people with a disability.
Strong communication, teamwork, and organisational skills.
Ability to remain calm under pressure and manage long days during competition.
Understanding of the needs of athletes with an intellectual disability.
First Aid/CPR certification and Working With Children Check.Skills and Experience Needed
